Annual Activities

Currently the Committee organizes the following activities on an annual basis;

a) Annual Scholarships and Awards
The OBA has instituted several scholarships and awards to students in recognition of their overall academic excellence as well as excellence in specific subjects. These scholarships and awards include the Peach Scholarship, the Chan Weng Chiu Foundation Scholarship (instituted by him), Kwong Sea Khoon Geography Award, K.G.Zachariah Physics Award and A.G.Lee Medal. These awards and scholarships are presented to the winners during the School’s Annual Prize giving Day.

b) Dudley Shield Games
Launched in 1963 in memory of our 1st Patron, the late Mr William Dudley, this is an annual competition wherein Old Boys compete against the Present Boys and Staff of both schools in nine (9) games for the Dudley Shield. In some years the number of games played were reduced because of difficulties of raising teams. It is interesting to note that in the early 1990’s a Deputy Minister, namely the late Datuk Alex Lee, launched the Games in the School field.

c) Annual Dinner
This is the formal event of the year. It has generally been very popular with the members particularly in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Over the past decade except for 3 years there has been a decline in the numbers attending these dinners. The best attended dinners so far have been the 55-tables Silver Jubilee Dinner in 1985 and 74-tables Fundraising Dinner in 2000.

d) Career Talks
The OBA has organized career talks over the years for the present students with the aim of providing guidance for their future undertakings. These talks have generally been well received by the present boys and appreciated by the school authorities.

e) Service to Boards of Governors of Primary and Secondary Schools
Members of the OBA have served on both the Boards from the beginning. Its past President, Mr.Chan Weng Chiu, was for 10 years the Chairman of both the Boards whilst Datuk Venugopal has been on the Board of Governors of the Secondary School since 1969. Apart from the 3 OBA representatives on each of these Boards some other OBA Committee members by invitation represented other parties in these Boards reflecting the recognition of the role played by Old Boys.

f) Assistance to School Development Programmes
The Association has participated actively in the School Development Programmes by jointly organising Fundraising events with the School and providing other forms of assistance as and when required to the best of its ability. In addition, a few old boys notably Tan Sri Azman Hashim had generously responded to direct appeals to him for monetary and other assistance. Similarly, group of old boys of a particular batch or class have provided assistance to the school.

Apart from the above the OBA had also organized certain activities in some years such as lunches, dinners and tea parties to hold dialogues with the members of the School, Parent-Teachers Association and the Boards on common matters of concern affecting the school. In the arena of sports, the OBA had also held coaching sessions in several games to raise the standards of present boys. The Association had also organized badminton and table tennis tournaments in the past.

To finance the running of these annual activities the Management Committees through these years undertook the following approaches to raise funds for the OBA;

  1. Sent out appeal letters to all its’ members for donations
  2. Passed out pledge forms during the Annual Dinners and other OBA events to members to commit themselves to make donations;
  3. Passed containers around during the dinners to collect donations on the spot; and
  4. Held charity or fundraising dinners as in the year 2000.

All donations received via the above approaches were counted on the spot or recorded when received later and subsequently registered in the OBA Building Fund.
